"Mythological City of Gold" revealed from the sky

The legend of a lost city deep in the Amazon jungle drew throngs of explorers to their deaths. Spanish conquistadors ventured into the jungle seeking fortune, but they were lost forever.  This led experts to believe that the Amazon was inhospitable and the lost city was nothing more than a myth. Now, satellite photos reveal that such a city does in fact exist.

The photos reveal over two hundred massive earthworks, spanning more than one hundred and fifty-five miles, carved in the upper Amazon basin. The earthworks are in the form of geometric shapes and create a network of avenues, ditches, and other enclosures that date back as far as 200 AD.

These creations stretch more than two hundred and fifty kilometers and so far only one-tenth of the “geoglyph culture” has been unearthed. Initial beliefs maintain that this ancient civilization could have maintained a population of over sixty thousand. The scale and complexity of this city has some anthropologists saying that this is a feat that rivals Egypt’s pyramids.

There is still much more of this new civilization to be unearthed, but it is now clear that the Spanish conquistadors who spoke of hidden cities in the Amazon told the truth.
